A general air purifier is qualified enough to improve the indoor air quality and give you clean, fresh and healthy air.

The first thing you need to decide is exactly what particles you are trying to get rid of. If it is just dust, then don't waste your money on a true HEPA that captures 99.97% of particles and their costly replacement filters. But if you also want to get rid of pollen and other allergens then nothing short of a true HEPA will do.

If you are allergic to allergens such as grass pollen, you may need an air purifier with a HEPA filter designed to relieve allergy, which is able to remove 99.97% of common airborne allergens as small as 0.3 microns including pollen, dust mites, pet dander, ragweed and mold spores.

More importantly, HEPA air purifiers are considered to be the most efficient units available in the market. If you are asthmatic or your symptoms may be triggered by certain odors and chemical pollutants, perhaps you should consider an asthma air purifier or an odor and chemical air purifier, which usually contain an activated carbon filter capturing annoying odors.

A HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter is an air filter that has been tested and found to conform to a specific U.S. military standard.

Filters rated as HEPA are able to eliminate particles as tiny as 0.3 microns with an efficiency of 99.97%, but in fact, there are existing some “HEPA-like” or “HEPA-blabla” concept filter on the market which are not real HEPA filter, so “true HEPA” filters are often referred to in some consumer information.

Some filters for HVAV systems are labeled as “HEPA-like” because of their higher efficiency compared with ordinary panel filters. They are pleated as a true HEPA filter so as to increase its surface area thus diminishes air resistance, which enables them to be used without upgrading the HVAV system. These “HEPA-like” filters have better performance than panel filters but not as well as true HEPA filters.

Don’t mistake these expensive “HEPA-like” filters for true HEPA filters.
